Coping with the Emotional Process of a Child Custody Battle

California’s Family Code often results in emotionally difficult situations for parents, who might not be able to spend as much time with a child as desired.

Divorces, while usually emotionally charged, can prove especially painful and difficult when child custody issues are involved.

There are some essential pieces of advice that parents should follow, which if not followed could result in additional hardships during a divorce.

  • Avoid Saying Negative Things to Your Children Always remember that your children come first and that the children should have no part in the custody struggle. Parents must avoid saying things that will alienate children or make children feel confused about how to respond to each parent.
  • Correspond Professionally. Be cautious of how you communicate through various platforms. Always ask yourself if what you’re communicating could be considered insensitive. Communications that could be considered insensitive could be negatively perceived by a judge or used against you in the custody struggle. If you are unsure about the professionalism of any of your communications, check with your attorney first.
  • Utilize a Healthy Perspective. One of the most important parts of going through something as emotionally charged as a child custody struggle is to maintain control of your emotions. Utilize the best resources available to you to maintain a healthy and positive perspective. Avoid falling into the trap of thinking that drugs or alcohol can help the situation. Consider seeing a counselor, even if temporarily, to ensure that you are coping effectively. While discussing the matter with your friends for support is encouraged, realize that every divorce and child custody matter is different. As a result, if you find yourself in need of an opinion about your situation, discuss it with your attorney.

Child custody struggles are one of the most difficult parts of a divorce.
